The image speaks of permanence within a state of change, or, as felt in the music of Vas, a sound that is at once timeless and strikingly new. Like Loreena McKennitt, Greg Ellis and vocalist Azam Ali evoke a distinct sense of medieval place and time, but one that originates further east and is warmed by the elegiac sound of Farsi on such tracks as "Song for Soheil," or the hammered dulcimer that punctuates "Inamorata." Ali's vocals are suffused with spirit, while Ellis and guest cellist Cameron Stone masterfully hold together their wide instrumental range.
